Kids Helping Kids in Kenya 2010

Playing games at the park thanks to donations from Canada, especially Xavier!
Gently used hoodies donated by the Wills family....yes it gets cold in Africa!

I am just amazed at how generous people were at my recent fundraiser....we raised over $1000 in just one night of fun!

But also so amazed by one particular boy, who before I traveled to Kenya, donated his birthday money to me so we could help Toto Love.

Xavier is only 7, but has the knowledge and love of an adult. I am very sure this is due to his wonderful parents Annie and Len! Annie is a colleague of mine and came to me when she knew that Xavier wanted to donate money to a charity, but something a bit different than the norm. He wanted one that he could have a connection with.

Before my trip I visited Xavier to talk to him about how he wanted his money spent. He wanted some toys, food and household items purchased for them. So that is exactly what I did! I purchased fun toys in Canada to take over as I knew we were having a day at the park with the Toto Love children and would need some items to play with. I also purchased cookies, chips and pop for the special day. Groceries and household items were also purchased on this trip and I was able to put money in their bank account to pay for rent for Toto Love...something really needed so they don't have to worry about that, like many of us have.

Some other children who donated were Josie and Kieran (children of my cousins). When they found out that I was visiting this orphanage they were very concerned. A few days later I was stocked up with items very suitable for children and especially the teen girls! From hockey jersey to makeup....everything was a hit! They also included letters to the Toto Love children!

Amazing jobs in 2009:

Senator Riley Middle School in my town of High River did a bottle drive in 2009 raising over $1000. Great job!

Usha donated her pop bottles and allowance also in 2009 when she heard about the children and Ken and Jenna also donated pop bottles in 2009 and in 2010 sent over hoodies!

So children helping children is a real possibility! A big thank you to all these wonderful children! You are an inspiration to others!

They had one bike between 12 children.....both tires were flat!

Last year we painted the orphanage and it still looked good inside and out!

Justin is a tailor and works out of Toto Love. He is 17 and HIV +

Learning to play new games! Solitaire, chess, checkers etc.

Our supporters: Caravan driver Paul

Paul

Paul is the greatest driver. This is his second time driving for me. He has been with Caravan as a driver for about 5 years and driver for 15 years. He is a husband and father of 2 children. He is not just our driver but friend, and is wonderful around the Toto Love children. He is also bonding with them! Talia is probably his favorite! I think it is because the share similar personalities!

We couldn't do this trip without him as he is so knowledgeable and acts like our bodyguard! I would be so disappointed if he couldn't take us or if he quit....

He has a great sense of humour too and we have also introduced him to Cosmo magazines from North America!

The other volunteers of Toto Love: Melanie and Katja

Katja (dark hair, dark t-shirt) Melanie (blonde hair, white t-shirt)

These are the 2 letters from the fabulous volunteers from Germany.

My name is Katja Muller, I come from Germany, Sindelfingen. After passing my exams I decided to go abroad for one year. So I apply at the german organization "weltwearts". I'd like to spend time with children and youth. In Germany there are many groups for kids which I join, also as a group leader. Weltwearts answered my application and so I heard the frist time of Toto Love. I hoped they will pick me as a volunteer because the project sounds very well to me. Now I am so happy to be here and stay at Toto Love for one year.
My name is Melanie Fendes and I come from Obesursel in Germany. For 2 years I decided to do a social year and last year I wrote an application to "weltwaerts" an organization for sending volunteers all over the world. My favorite country or continent was Africa. So they said that they would have place for me in Toto Love, Embu. I really enjoy to spend time with children and youths and in the church in Obesursel I was a group leader. That is the reason why I said "yes" to Toto love without thinking about another project. Now I am here with Katja for one year and after that we want to study.

Katja and Melanie help out around the house with chores and cooking. You can see how much the children love them and they spend lots of time playing with them. They were planning a Halloween party for them for 2010. Very courageous to spend 1 year in Embu as a billet with another family. In order to get to and from the orphanage they take the Matatus (which are crammed busses full of pax) as there is no city buses.

We are very thankful for their dedication to the children.

The other volunteers of Toto Love: Ruth

Ruth
Founder of Toto Love

Her vision of Toto Love is blossoming. She saw the plight of HIV+ children in Kenya and knew something needed to be done. Instead of sitting back or only helping from afar, she opened this small but mighty orphanage. She is also like a mother to them, and the kids love her! She is very loving and full of energy! She is a very dependable woman and I love working with her. I can still hear her laugh, gentle voice and see the sparkle in her eyes when she talks!
Ruth is the reason for Toto Love!

The other volunteers of Toto Love: Milkah

Milkah

House mom extraordinaire

Milkah is also HIV +, and by being the house mom means hard work. She is with 12 children like a real mom. In facts she refers to the Toto Love children as her babies. She cooks, cleans and takes care of the children 24 hrs a day. Imagine if you were a single mom of 12 children...this is kind of what it is like for her. So she relies heavily on other volunteers to help make things go smoothly at Toto Love. She has lots of love and energy!

The children of Toto Love: Talia

Talia 4 years old and in nursery school

This girl is the feistiest of them all! Such a doll. She has such a great personality, and it showed last year! She hasn't stopped! So energetic and so much fun. A real cutie! Our driver Paul was really wrapped around her finger last year and this year!
Talia will finish Nursery in 2011.
Talia's story is featured in my 2009 blog.

The children of Toto Love: Mugambi

Mugambi (Brian) is 13 years old and in grade 1

If you read my blog from last year you will know about the horrific plight of this young man. Last year his dermatitis was so bad, and his head scars from the infection and maggots was still very visible. Mugambi has had a dramatic change. His skin is much more supple and less dry, and his head scars are less noticeable. He is speaking more English and is more outgoing. Last year he was not able to sing many of the songs that the kids were singing and this year, I noticed him singing at the table while he was colouring! His full story is featured in my 2009 blog.

The children of Toto Love: Justin

Justin

Justin is 17 and now working as a tailor out of Toto Love orphanage. This is a valuable skill for a Kenyan. He is making and selling his aprons currently. Justin is new to Toto Love,

The children of Toto Love: Dereck

Dereck is 13 and in grade 6

Dereck has really grown into the man of the house! He is doing well in school and speaks english very well. He loves his soccer and is so energetic. He was very pleased to see us and was so proud to wear the Canadian jersey given to the boys this year!
Dereck is featured in my 2009 blog.

The children of Toto Love: Edna

Edna is 15 and in grade 7

Edna was much more shy last year and this year she is more outgoing and doing well in school. Her english is coming along nicely. Still very polite, and she helps out a lot around Toto Love with the children. Edna was very excited to get letters from another teenager in Canada and made sure she wrote back to her.

Edna was raped by her father and that is how she became HIV+. She is now able to talk more about it and wants to become a spokesperson for HIV and her story.

Such a brave young girl.

The children of Toto Love: Njeri

Njeri is 5 and in nursery

Shy as ever but so beautiful. She is around 5 years of age now but starting to slowly come out of her shell. I am anxious to watch this one grow! She is cute as a bug!

The children of Toto Love: Gakii

Gakii (Annette) is 6 and in nursery

Last year I barely got to know Gakii because she was so shy and this year she was so more open and spent many hours sitting with us and colouring.
She is really doing well and so proud that she is more outgoing. She is now 6.
She was eager to hold our hands and see what we were up to daily!

The children of Toto Love: Joy

Joy

Joy is the only child currently without HIV. She came to Toto Love because she was basically being abandoned by her maternal aunt who already had 12 children and
suffered from depression. Joy's mom died while giving birth.

Joy turned 7 this year. She is doing so well at Toto Love and is so much fun to be around.
Joy is featured on the Toto Love 2009 blog.

The children of Toto Love: Allan

Allan

Allan is one of the pioneers of Toto Love, he is doing amazing. He is growing much stronger. I can see an improvement in his size. He isn't as shy this year! Spent much more time around us. He seems to have a good sense of humor, atleast with his facial expressions!
His story is featured on my 2009 blog.

The children of Toto Love: Catherine

Catherine is 8 years old and in grade 1

Catherine came to Toto Love in 2009 and is just blossoming. She turned 8 in March. She was very happy to see us. She is doing well with her english both oral and written. She was a pleasure to be around. Please see my blog for 2009 for her history.

The children of Toto Love: Diana

Diana (Karimi) is 15 and in grade 5

Diana is in grade 5 and new to Toto Love. She was living with an Auntie then her sister but due to her sister's abusive relationship with her husband it was best that Diana come to foster care. She is HIV + but has a winning smile and warm heart. She easily accepted us and wasn't shy at all. She is a big help to the other children. We loved having her around. Even though she had injured her foot a few days before our visit she was eager to partake in the events. She speaks very good english. I look forward to watching her progress.

The children of Toto Love: Sharon

Sharon is approximately 3 and not in school yet

This is Sharon, and her age is unknown. They believe she is around 3 years of age due to the fact that she was at the hospital for a while. Last year we visited her at the hospital and she was barely walking, barely smiling and not toilet trained. Now she almost toilet trained, walks and is learning to talk. She is much more outgoing and loves to be hugged and loved up!
She is a beautiful girl and we are so thankful that Toto Love was able to bring her home this year otherwise she would still be in the hospital, living there, as foster families
and other orphanages are not available.

My visit to Toto Love, Embu Kenya 2010

Shoe shopping with the children!

Well I have just returned from my second trip to this wonderful orphanage. I am very excited to share the children's progress and many wonderful pictures!

Tami and I left Canada on October 13th, 2010 and arrived in Kenya 2 days later on the 15th. We arrived in Embu later that afternoon. Ruth called quickly to see if we were in town! Children had not slept waiting our arrival.

When we arrived at the orphanage many familiar faces greeted Tami, Paul (our driver) and myself. It was such a joy to see everyone. The older children were still at school but the younger children were all over us, shaking our hands and giving us lots of hugs.

2 German volunteers, Melanie and Katja, were also now at the orphanage, they volunteer 5 days a week with the house hold needs. What a wonderful job and the children obviously love them too!

We spent the evening having dinner, handing out donations and visiting. It was good to be back.

Tami was given a Kenyan name which is Makena....means joyful. Derek was very adamant that she be named that as she was laughing so much!

The next day were arrived to take the kids shoe shopping at Bata. We purchased 16 pairs of shoes (leather school shoes for 13, 1 pair of sneakers for Sharon and Justin and new shoes for house mom Milkah). Grand total $250.

We made 3 trips in the van to do this! The kids were amazingly patient. Even the smallest ones like Sharon just sat there waiting to get new shoes. I have never seen so many well behaved children at one time!

After shoe shopping and a bit of visiting we left for dinner (Tami, Paul and I) as Sunday was going to be a big day.... Field trip with the kids!

On Sunday we picked up the kids, in 2 loads, and took them to GTI which is a Government training facility. We were using their field to play at since Toto Love doesn't have a large enough yard, or even grass.

We had picked up Fanta pop, chips, popcorn and cookies for the afternoon. We started with some soccer, using a Canadian blowup ball, then went onto a big game of duck, duck, goose. That was hilarious as even the adults were playing. We also had some races with the adults. Dodge ball, and a tug of war game. In between playing games we stopped for snacks.

We had over 20 children for this event and even some of the GTI worker's children who were at the facility joined us.

About 4 hours later we packed up and left for Toto Love. Children and adults all tired! I slept like a log.

On Monday the children were in school so we visited the St Michael's and took school supplies (pencils and notebooks) to the Toto Love children's classrooms. Teachers were very happy to have extra supplies to share amongst the students. We sang Oh Canada to the older classrooms. We were given a tour of the school grounds and found out that they are gardening and raising rabbits and Talapia fish which is a great skill. I also found out that there is a lunch program at the school so children have the option of bringing a lunch, buying a hot lunch or going home for lunch. Toto Love children do the latter.

Today the children were being visited by the medical staff at Toto Love for a check up so Paul drove the school children at lunch time for their appointment while we had tea and sandwiches with the headmaster, thanking him for his support.

We also found out that there are over 170 schools in Embu and St. Michael's is the only school to accept Toto Love children. These is all because they are HIV positive. Still such a stigma attached to this disease. We hope that when other's see us with them that they understand that you can't get HIV from touching someone with it, or even hugging or kissing. We also hope that they understand that these children did not do anything wrong to get HIV. They were born into it, due to their mother, except Edna who was raped by her HIV + father.

Ruth, Melanie, Katja, Tami and I went shopping for groceries, uniform pieces and then to the bank to leave the orphanage some money to cover rent for a few months.

We returned to Toto Love for our last visit, promising not to stay too long, but long enough to say good bye to each child and get letters, videos and hugs all done.

Bancy, who left the orphanage this year, returned for the medical check up and was surprised to see me. I had special gifts for her.

We left for the hotel, ate dinner, a big plate of french fries and talked about our wonderful whirlwind visit....shocked to believe it was already over. The next day we were ready to go first thing in the morning. Off to Voi Lodge.
